The gerfalcons ( Caracarinae, formerly called Polyborinae ) or Caracaras are a group of predatory birds of the New World, which are placed in a separate subfamily within the family of the Falk -like ( Falconidae ).

The subfamily includes five genera and 9 species. The vultures falcons are traditionally managed as a separate subfamily of the Falconidae, so also in the Check -list of North American Birds of North American Classification Committee ( NACC ), the American Ornithologists ' Union. According to the classification of the South American Classification Committee ( SACC ) of the same ornithological association of the genera gerfalcons will be classified together with the genus Falco in the subfamily of the authentics falcons (Falco Ninae ).

Gerfalcons are native to South and Central America, a way of Southern Caracara ( Caracara plancus ), has a distribution area to the southern United States. Unlike the authentics Falcons are gerfalcons no fast-flying hunters, but with regard to the food rather adaptable opportunists. In addition to insects, worms and small vertebrates, many of the species have specialized on carrion as easily accessible main food. Even waste from human settlements are in some species for food spectrum.
