Practically insoluble in water

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS ) is a silicon-based polymer. Its structural units called siloxanes. It is colorless, transparent and considered as non-toxic and chemically inert. Inspired by the English name Dimethicone it is as a drug under the name dimethicone ( INN) against gas accumulations in the gastrointestinal tract, as defoamers in Tensidvergiftungen than Pedikulozid (ie head lice ), the lubricious coating by most of condoms sold and used for cosmetic products.

Properties

The boiling point is about 200 ° C ( low-molecular type and high molecular weight decompose prior to vaporization at> 200 ° C) and the vapor pressure of 6.66 hPa at 20 ° C.

Medical use

Defoamers

Called dimethicone, also known as polydimethylsiloxane ( PDMS) is used as entblähendes, antiflatulentes means of gas accumulations in the gastrointestinal tract ( bloating, tympanites, meteorism, Roemheld syndrome), to reduce the noise accumulations of gas in X-ray, endoscopy and ultrasound scans as well as defoamers applied in cases of poisoning with surfactants. Enriched with solid SiO2 particles, it is called simethicone.

Dimethicone is a long chain organic silicon compound which purely physically lowers the surface tension of entrapped gas bubbles in the gastrointestinal tract and this is dissolved thereby. The gases can be absorbed in the intestine or naturally come off. An absorption or chemical reaction of the agent in the body resides not take place, it is inert and is excreted unchanged by passage through the intestine.

Side effects have not been observed so far.

Pedikulozid

After randomized clinical trials, a dimethicone solution is also effective against head lice.

We discuss two pedikulozide modes of action:

  • Suffocation due to penetration of the dimethicone in the tracheae of lice and
  • Cardiac arrest, because, by the softening of the exoskeleton, the heart can no longer contract because it is attached to the exoskeleton.

Side effects have not been observed so far. However, the hair is short-term highly flammable after application of 4% dimethicone 96% cyclomethicone combination agents, which can lead in some cases to severe burns.

Use as a food additive

Polydimethylsiloxane is approved as a food additive in the group of anti-foaming agent (E 900). It is used in the food industry in the manufacture of jams, marmalades, fruit and vegetable canning and ( frying ) fats.

Technical application

In addition to the medical use of PDMS also plays an important role in the art as:

  • Lubricants, such as condoms, the lubricious coating
  • Heat transfer oil
  • Adsorbent in analytical chemistry, such as in solid-phase microextraction, or stir bar sorptive extraction
  • Stamp in the plastic electronics
