Polyethylene naphthalate ( PEN abbreviations, trade name: Teonex ) is produced by polycondensation of thermoplastic material of the polyester family.

Production and representation

PEN is produced by polycondensation of ethylene glycol and 2,6- naphthalenedicarboxylate (2,6- NDC, CAS :840 -65 -3).

Properties

PEN has been known since the early 1980s. PEN differs from PET by a higher gas-tightness and heat resistance, and mechanical properties ( modulus, strength) and increased to chemicals, UV and hydrolysis. The bending fatigue strength, however, is low and the price is higher. PEN has good properties as an organic scintillator with an emission wavelength in the visible range (blue), in contrast to UV at PET. PEN can be used as copolymer ET / EN, as a polymer blend PET PEN and not only be used as a homopolymer.

Use

Due to its properties, PEN has proven alternative packaging for all foods that are hot filled. The increased glass transition temperature causes the PEN container up to 85 ° C ( 60 ° C PET ) can be washed. Further applications of PEN packaging ( foils and threads ), containers and medical devices. In addition, they come in plastic film capacitors and as a speaker membranes.
