Polygnotos (vase painter)

Polygnotos ( Πολύγνωτος ancient Greek ) was a Greek vase painter who was active in Athens ca 450-420 BC. He is considered one of the most important red-figure vase painter of the style of the high classical period. His education was Polygnotos in the workshop of the painter Niobid. It was based on the monumental painting, such as the Polygnotos of Thasos, after which he probably renamed itself. Polygnotos painted large vessels such as stamnoi, krater, hydria and neck amphorae, besides also Nolanische amphorae and Peliken.

In addition to this famous vase painters are still two more vase painter named Polygnotos known. They are in the scientific literature, however, indicated by the Notnamen Lewis painter and Nausicaa Painter.
