Polykarp Leyser III.

Polycarp Leyser III. ( Born July 1, 1656 in Halle, † October 11, 1725 in Celle ) was a German Protestant theologian, superintendent, court chaplain and orientalist.

Life and work

After years of studying theology and philosophy in Halle, Braunschweig and in particular at the University of Jena, he attended the University of Hamburg in order to keep itself in Esdras Edzardus (1629-1708) in oriental languages ​​. In 1675, he moved to the University of Leipzig, where he earned a master's degree a year later. Here Leyser wrote several disputations among others, Adam Rechenberg (1642-1721), with his brother Friedrich Wilhelm Leyser (1658-1720), who later became general counsel of the city of Magdeburg, his Respondent was.

With a brief interruption in the years 1679 to 1682, where he was with Karl Henry of Einsiedeln Hofmeister first and moved with him to Rinteln to escape the plague in Leipzig, Leyser lectured in philosophy and Oriental Studies and became the Assessor Faculty of philosophy, University of Leipzig appointed.

In 1685 he was appointed as pastor at the Holy Spirit Church in Magdeburg and in 1687 appointed him superintendent and pen elders of Wunstorf, where he earned his doctorate in theology in 1690. Finally, in 1695 he was appointed General Superintendent of the Principality of Calenberg. There, he was given the Konsistorialstelle in 1698, before he received in 1708 the office of the General Superintendent of Celle. He continued in this last position until his death in 1725.

Family

Polycarp Leyser, son of Friedrich Wilhelm Leyser (1622-1691) and Christine Margarethe Malsius ( circa 1630 - before 1720), was first married to Margaretha Magdalena Barckhausen ( 1666-1699 ), daughter of the theologian Hermann Barckhausen ( 1629-1695 ) and the Magdalena Gesenius († 1677). With her he had at least two children, including the later theologians, philosophers and historians Polycarp Leyser IV ( 1690-1728 ). A later marriage produced two more children.
