Polykarp Leyser IV.

Polycarp Leyser IV ( born September 4, 1690 in Wunstorf, † April 7, 1728 Helmstedt ) was a German Protestant theologian, philosopher, physician, lawyer and historian.

Life and work

After his school days he had spent with his brother Friedrich Wilhelm Leyser († 1766 ) in Ilfeld, Göttingen and Magdeburg, he began his study years in 1709, first at the University of Rinteln and a year later at the University of Rostock, where he referred to the family tradition studied theology. Already in 1712 he moved then to the University of Helmstedt, where he heard lectures by, among others, Johann Andreas Schmidt ( 1652-1726 ), but also increasingly devoted himself to philosophy. But only a year later he returned to his father's wish first home back to educate yourself there through private studies, but in 1714 he then visited the University of Wittenberg with the theologian and historian Gottlieb Werndorf the Elder ( 1668-1729 ) to argue. Here Leyser founded the " societas colligentium " and was appointed in 1716 after the acquisition of Master in Philosophy assessor of the philosophical institution. In parallel with this activity, he participated as a student of medicine sciences of medical lectures and private medical training. In 1718, Leyser followed a call to Helmstedt, where he was initially appointed later as full professor of philosophy, poetry and history associate professor of philosophy and one year. As Polycarp Leyser in a ceremony at the University of Rinteln, to which he was sent, hit a Baron of Danckelmann, he agreed with the latter a joint scientific journey. This led the pair first to Kassel, Frankfurt, Giessen, Mainz and Heidelberg, before finally in 1722 came to Strasbourg. At the university there Leyser acquired on August 6, 1722 Doctor of Medicine, and on November 5 of that year, the Doctor of Laws. It took him a few years and in that time he published an impressive array of historical and legal-historical treatises, so among other things, the report " de flore academiarum promovendo " about his study trips. According to another study trip to Denmark in 1726, he returned to his home to Wunstorf back to where his professorship of history was transferred to the University of Helmstedt. In the same year he married, but a long happy marriage and other professional ascents were denied him because he already died in 1728 with only 38 years after a brief violent disorder.

Polycarp Leyser was a go-getting, highly intelligent man who had acquired four subject areas studied, and three doctorate and his thirst for knowledge was never long endure to a place. Despite his short life, there is a wealth of treatises from his pen, some of which are published as collections posthumously.

Family

Polycarp Leyser, son of Polycarp Leyser III. (1656-1725) and Margaretha Magdalena Barckhausen (1666-1699), daughter of the theologian Hermann Barckhausen (1629-1695) and Magdalena Gesenius († 1677) was married to the widow Louise Schröter born Schmid, with whom he shared the daughter Philippina Sibylla had.
