Pompeo Marchesi
Pompeo Marchesi ( born August 7, 1789 in Saltrio in Varese, † February 6, 1858 in Milan ) was an Italian sculptor.
Life
The artistic training began in Milan and was completed with the help of a government scholarship in Rome. All his life he felt obliged antiquity. In 1811 he returned to Milan and worked until 1825 in Milan, among others, statues for the Cathedral of Milan. It was followed by an appointment as professor at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, a position which he held until his death. 1825-1830 he created in Milan more than 100 major and small works. 1834 burned down the studio of the artist, with all models and many have already been executed in marble sculptures perished. While he was quite young compared to years in artistic circles with Antonio Canova and Bertel Thorvaldsen, later, his fame faded. Marchesi was last kk Hofstatuarius 1846 and received the Order of the Iron Crown, 3rd Class, 1850, he was elevated to knighthood. France awarded him the Legion of Honour. He also was a member of 17 academies of art.
