Pompeu Fabra

Pompeu Fabra i Poch (* 1868 in Gràcia, Barcelona today, † 1948 in Prades, France) was a Catalan philologist. He is considered the " father" of the linguistic norms of the Catalan language.

Life

Pompeu Fabra i Poch studied at the University of Barcelona. By profession he was industrial engineer, but developed very early a great interest in his native language. About the Journal L' Avenc 1890-91 he started a campaign to reform the Catalan spelling. 1904 published with Jaume Massó i Torrents ( 1863-1943 ) and Joaquim Casas i Carbó ( 1858-1943 ), a treatise on the Catalan spelling. Very active, he was also the first international congress on the Catalan language ( 1906).

In 1912 he published in Spanish a standard work used today: Gramática de la lengua Catalana ( Catalan grammar of the language ). The Institut d' Estudis Catalans declared 1913 contained in Pompeu Fabras book grammatical norms of the standard, published in 1918 a book of the Institute among Fabras supervision. Later, this was also the Chairman of the Institute. In 1917 there dictionary for Catalan spelling.

Its probably but the biggest and best-known work was published in 1932 Diccionari general de la Catalana llengua ( General Dictionary of the Catalan language ). In the same year he was appointed unopposed for a chair at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

In 1934 he was imprisoned by political tensions, which, however, only made him even more famous in Catalonia. At the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936-39 ), he left his country into exile in France, where he lived until his death. His grave in Cuixa near Prada (French Prades ) in the French northern Catalonia is visited every year by thousands of Catalans today.

The University was founded in 1990 by the Catalan parliament's decision Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona was named after him. A great place in Barcelona also carries his name.
