History

With the Bible encyclical Providentissimus Deus, Pope Leo XIII. 1893, the standards outlined for the use of Scripture. On October 30, 1902, he dropped the Apostolic Constitution Vigilantiae studiique the foundation for the " Pontifical Biblical Commission ". Initial situation was the end of the 19th century incipient anti-modernism. In this period, there were disputes about the historical criticism of the Bible, the Bible teaching and interpretation of Scripture. The climax of this discussion leads 1897, the confrontation with the modern interpreters and the Holy Office, which was responsible for the Church's teaching. This was one of the triggers for the establishment of the Pontifical Biblical Commission ( Pontificia Commisio de re biblica ).

Anti-modernism

During the pontificate of Pope Pius X, who in his Apostolic Exhortation again convicted in 1907 in the form of a Motu Proprio Praestantia Scripturae the lessons of modernism and as a punishment for the modernists imposed automatic excommunication, occurred within the Biblical Commission a major turn. The previously temperate members gradually left the Commission and were replaced by reactionary members. With the anti-modernist oath from September 1, 1910 Pius X issued an oath text that required all teachers to respect the resolutions and decisions of the Biblical Commission and to swear on the encyclical " Deus Providentissimus ". This meant that after the death of Pius X., chaired by the President Willem Marinus Cardinal van Rossum, C.Ss.R. (1854-1992), who was also prefect of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, no fundamental decisions had been taken. Pius XI. lent of the Biblical Commission the right to award doctorates and was pursuing the promotion of exegetical studies. The right to award academic degrees licentiate and doctorate, is subject to certain conditions. At the same time he established the Pontifical Biblical Institute as a center for academic Bible studies.

After the 2nd Vatikanischem Council

It was Pope Paul VI. of 1971, the decisions of the Second Vatican Council transposed and initiated a fundamental reform of the Pontifical Biblical Commission.
