Ponts (Manche)

Ponts is a commune with 591 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Manche in Basse-Normandie region. It belongs to the Pays de la Baie du Mont -Saint -Michel and the community association Avranches.

Geography

The scattered settlement Ponts is located in the northwest of France, 70 km north-east of Rennes. Neighboring communities of Ponts are Saint -Jean -de- la- Haize in the West, Chavoy in the Northeast, Saint- Senier -sous -Avranches Avranches in the Southeast and in the Southwest. The municipality covers 670 hectares, the average height is 40 meters above sea level, the Mairie stands at a height of 18 meters. The Sée flows through the municipal area.

History

According to the law loi Guizot from June 28, 1833, each municipality had to deal with more than 500 residents have their own elementary school. The congregation rented to a school in Avranches, but the construction of the Route nationale N175 fell victim. 1838 purchased by the City land in the municipality and in 1842 the école des garçons ( boys' school ) was built, which is now used as a town hall. Today there is no more school in the municipality.

Culture and sights

The Gothic church of Saint -Étienne was built in the 15th century and enlarged in the 16th century. Your patron saint is Saint Stephen. The square bell tower dates from the 15th century. It was classified in February 1954 as a monument historique ( historic monument ') and downgraded in November 1954.
