Pope Boniface I

Boniface I. († September 4 422 in Rome) was dated December 29, 418 until 4 September 422 Pope in Rome. His father's name was Jocundus or Secundius.

Life

The very old and sickly presbyter Boniface was chosen together with the archdeacon Eulalius on 28 December; Boniface of the presbyters and deacons Eulalius of the party but it was banned in March / April 419, and Boniface was appointed by Emperor Honorius to the rightful pope.

He tried to make the troubled church in peace, and revoked powers that his predecessor Pope Zosimus had given the local bishops of Gaul. But even he could not resolve the conflict with the North African Church in the appellation dispute. When Emperor Theodosius II in 421 Illyricum put under the jurisdiction of the Patriarch of Constantinople Opel, Boniface reached with the help of the Emperor Honorius a revocation of the order. With his friend, Augustine fought against Pelagianism.

The first ( imperial ) Pope election regulations that in the future a new election must take place by the Roman clergy in ambiguous or ambivalent papal election, but remained without any practical significance.

His name means: the benefactor (latin ) Being Catholic feast day is October 25.
