Pope Eutychian

Eutychianus (from Greek Eutychianos = " the delighted " short Eutychian; † December 7 283 ) was 275-283 Bishop of Rome. His grave inscription was discovered in the St. Callistus catacombs in Rome. Eutychians feast day is December 7.

About the life and work Eutychians little is known. Even the data of his episcopate are unsecured. Liber Pontificalis According to the he served 8 years and 11 months, from 4 January 275 to December 7, 283 Church historian Eusebius of Caesarea, however, reported Eutychian was just 10 months bishop of Rome.

According to legend, he allowed the blessing of grapes and beans on the altar and buried 324 martyrs with his own hands. Some historians doubt this tradition, there are no major persecutions known from the term Eutychians and the blessing of crops is generally ascribed to a later period.
