Pope Lucius I

Lucius I. (* in Rome, † March 5 254) was bishop of Rome for eight months (June 25, 253 until his death ).

Lucius was the Romans. From Kaiser Trebonianus Gallus Lucius was immediately sent into exile. After the violent death of the Emperor, he was able to return rapidly under his successor Valerian. The schism of Novatian took away under his tenure. Against the rigor of Novatians he represented as its predecessor, the milder direction in the practice of penance.

He is mentioned in several letters of St. Cyprian of Carthage, who praises him as a courageous confessors. Only later legends tell of a martyrdom. Like his predecessors, he found his final resting place in St. Callistus catacombs. In its rediscovery a piece of his grave inscription was found. His feast day is March 4.
