The river Poplar River is a river in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Manitoba.

It has its origin in the northwest of Kenora District, Ontario. It flows west to Lake Winnipeg. The river is located in one of the last largely untouched and intact boreal forests.

The Ojibwe called the river " Negginan ", which means " my home ".

The river flows through pristine forests and lakes and is fed by natural streams. The catchment area is the traditional land of the Poplar River First Nation represents the Ojibwe still use the area for hunting, fishing and gathering of herbs. The congregation of the First Nation has declared the area with support from the provincial government of Manitoba to a reserve. The lower reaches of the river now runs within the Poplar / Nanowin Rivers Park Reserve.

The river system of the Poplar River is part of a proposal for a new site of the UNESCO World Heritage Site to protect the large intact wilderness between Lake Winnipeg and the Western Ontario permanently.

There are no major mines, main roads, hydroelectric power plants and Baumfällflächen in the catchment area of the Poplar River. The area forms the habitat for woodland caribou and other endangered forest animals. Numerous archaeological sites testify to the importance of the region for the First Nations.

The Poplar River is a popular destination for anglers, canoeists and other forms of eco-tourism. There are many rapids and waterfalls along the river.
