Popular Republican Movement

The Mouvement populaire républicain (MRP, often called in German " Volksrepublikaner ") was a political party in France. It was founded in 1944 by Georges Bidault. The party was one in the 1950s alongside the German CDU / CSU and the Italian Christian Democrats to the three major Christian Democratic parties in Europe.

History

The MRP was in 1945 with the Communists winning in elections to the National Assembly and formed with them and the Socialists, the provisional government. In the Fourth Republic, the MRP was the dominant political force. In addition to Georges Bidault she managed major French politicians such as Robert Schuman and Pierre Pflimlin. Content represented the party a social reform program, was an advocate of Franco-German reconciliation and sought a United Europe.

Nevertheless, their election results already declined very rapidly. The Party, which was deeply divided on the issue of the Algerian problem. Large parts of the party joined the right-wing Gaullist, the remaining members founded in 1965 under the leadership of Jean Lecanuet the center- oriented démocrate Centre (later the Centre démocrates sociaux (CDS ) ). It joined the Union pour la Démocratie 1978 Française (UDF) and went in 1998 to this.
