Port Aggregation Protocol

The PAgP or Port Aggregation Protocol is a network protocol for dynamic grouping several physical Ethernet links with Cisco.

From the operating principle of the proprietary PAgP is similar to the open LACP. The PAgP identifies, by sending so-called hello packets, if two switches are directly connected over a physical connection. If this is the case, and is configured on both sides PAgP, these duplicate physical connections to a new logical link, called Etherchannel summarized.

PAgP should only be used in conjunction with a variant of the Spanning Tree Protocol, so as to avoid unintended loops in the network.
