Port Aransas is a city in Nueces County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in southeast Texas, on the Gulf of Mexico on Mustang Iceland, about 32 km east of Corpus Christi, separated by the Aransas Bay and has a total area of 31.3 km ², of which 8.5 km ² water surface.

History

The first permanent settlement of the island occurred in 1855 by Capt. Robert Ainsworth Mercer of Lancaster, England. He already moved in 1850 to San Jose Iceland and moved here in 1855 to enable and build a ranch with sheep and cattle. Since there were on the island many wild horses ( mustangs ), he named the island Mustang Iceland.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 3,370 people in 1,542 households and 993 families. The population density was 147.7 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 93.92 % White, 0.42 % African American, 1.25 % Native American, 0.86 % Asian, 0.03 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 2.17 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.36% were of mixed descent, and 6.08 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,542 households, 22.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.6 % were married couples living together. 7.3 % had a female householder with no husband, and 35.6 % were non-families. 29.1 % of all households were single-person households and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.18 and the average family size was 2.64 persons.

18.9% of the population were under 18 years old, 5.7 % from 18 to 24, 25.2% 25-44, 34.6 % from 45 to 64, and 15.7 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 45 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 108.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over 106.6 males.

The median income for a household was $ 39,432, and the median income for a family $ 46,719. Males have a median income of $ 28,000 versus $ 22,393 for females. The per capita income was $ 23,681. 11.3 % of the population and 7.1% of families are below the poverty line. Of which 17.4 % have children under the age of 18 and 3.5 % of those 65 or older.
