Port Glasgow

Port Glasgow (Gaelic Port Ghlaschu ) is a port city in Scotland.

Port Glasgow to Greenock is the second largest town in the Inverclyde, a Unitary Authority on the west coast of Scotland. It is drained by the River Clyde.

History

Port Glasgow was formerly known under the name of Newark, a vernacular term for new- work ( = new work). Its history is closely connected with the castle of Newark and the Maxwell family. The other important factor for Port Glasgow is, as the name suggests, the shipping industry. It ships here from the Netherlands and France were unloaded and brought the cargo in small boats on the Clyde to Glasgow. 1667 bought the city of Glasgow country on the coast to build a harbor and breakwater. This causes the village Newark was the first deep-sea port of Glasgow and was soon called Port Glasgow. 1833 Port Glasgow Free City. Attractions

The main attraction of the place is the Newark castle from the 1484. This was occupied until 1697 by the clan of the Maxwells. This castle stands near the edge of the Clyde very much.
