History
The city of Amsterdam and its port since the 13th century closely linked. The first port was on the Amstel River estuary between Dam Square and the IJ. On Damrak and along the Warmoesstraat the merchants settled that played a special role in the development of Amsterdam as a port city. In the 16th century the harbor on the east side of the old city center was where the shipyards were extended. After the islands were created Oostelijke and Westelijke islands in IJ.
The only connection from Amsterdam to the North Sea was on the Zuiderzee, today's IJsselmeer. As this track silted up, was applied to Den Helder and opened in 1825 in the reign of King William I (Netherlands) of Noordhollandsch Kanaal. As this channel could no longer accommodate the ever increasing ship traffic, a direct connection via IJmuiden was created to the North Sea to the North Sea Canal.
In the aftermath of the Port of Amsterdam has been expanded, the eastern waterfront and new dock along the North Sea Canal was created. 1892 Amsterdam was better connected via the Merwede Canal to the hinterland, 1952, this channel has been extended until after Tiel to the Amsterdam - Rhine Canal and thus a direct connection to the Rhine created.
As part of the Algemeen Uitbreidingsplan the western port area was further expanded in the 1950s, the eastern region thereby lost importance and was rebuilt from 1990 to residential areas.
