Porta San Giovanni (Rome)

Porta San Giovanni is a gate in the Aurelian Walls in the Italian capital Rome, named after the nearby Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano. It was commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII. built and inaugurated in 1574. It is disputed whether was used as the architect Giacomo della Porta Giacomo del Duca or who had Michelangelo assisted in the construction of Porta Pia. Contemporary sources mention only " a famous architect named Giacomo ." After the opening of the neighboring Porta Asinaria from the Aurelian period was closed.

The gate is at the beginning of the Via Appia Nuova and is constructed from simple ashlar, with a large bearded head on the outside as a decorative element. 1926, the construction of a new district outside the gate, side arches were built to accommodate rising traffic. They are to this day preserved.

On the Piazza di Porta San Giovanni is held annually since 1990 to May Day, the Festa del lavoro, the event Concerto per il Primo Maggio celebrare place in 1996 who took part and 500,000 in 2006 around 1.5 million visitors.
