Portage Creek is a village in the Yupik Inuit in the Dillingham Census Area, Alaska. According to the 2000 census, there lived 36 people.
Geography
Portage Creek is located at the mouth of Portage Creek in the Nushagak River. The Portage Creek was used for the portage of boats from the Nushagak River to the Kvichak River. Thus, the travelers could avoid the open waters of Bristol Bay and the long journey to the Etolin Point.
History
The place was used by the Yupik Eskimos in summer sleeping space. Since 1961, the village is permanently inhabited. 1963, a school was built. In the mid 1980 Portage Creek was an active community, but since then the population has decreased.
Traffic
In 1975, the Portage Creek Airport on its operation. Small boats and snowmobiles are the usual local transport.
