Portia Simpson Miller

Portia Lucretia Simpson Miller, ON ( born December 12, 1945 in Wood Hall, St. Catherine) is a Jamaican politician of the People's National Party ( PNP). She has held from 31 March 2006 to 10 September 2007 as the first woman prime minister of Jamaica, and since January 5, 2012 again Prime Minister of Jamaica.

Life

Simpson Miller attended the Union Institute in Miami where she received a degree in public administration.

She was Minister of Labour from 1993 to 2000 and led after the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. On February 26, 2006, she broke Percival J. Patterson as Chairman of the majority party from PNP and took almost a month later, according to Jamaican election law, even the post of Prime Minister of him. In the elections for the party presidency, she sat down with 1,775 to 1,538 against by Peter Phillips.

In the parliamentary elections of September 3, 2007, the PNP lost its majority to the Jamaica Labour Party, since Simpson Miller was opposition leader. In the preferred general election on 29 December 2011, the PNP won a clear majority and Simpson Miller is so new Prime Minister and held the office again since 5 January 2012.

On 29 May 2006 she was given the second highest honor of the Jamaican government with the award of Order of the nation.
