Portland Iceland is an island off the North Island of New Zealand. It extends in a north-south direction as a continuation of the southern tip of Mahia Peninsula southward into the sea. The island is used for sheep farming.
The island was named by the Māori Kahungunu Waikawaw when he sought here drinking water and only found salt water. Waikawa means " sour water ". On the island there is an automatic lighthouse.
