Porto Moniz [ poɾtu muniʃ ] is a village in the northwest of the island of Madeira, named after the Portuguese nobleman Francisco Moniz. He came from the Algarve and had in 1533 settled here. Making a living in Porto Moniz were once whaling and fishing, today there are viticulture and tourism. The village has a harbor, a helipad, a modern waterfront and is known for its naturally formed swimming pools in the volcanic rock. Protection from the surf offers the small offshore rocky island Ilhéu pier, on which a lighthouse is located. In the coming of the 18th century, located directly on the coast and partially rebuilt small fortress Forte São João Baptista, the Inaugurated in 2005 Aquário da Madeira. It is dedicated to the marine world around Madeira.
