Poso

Geographical unit

Poso is a town in the Indonesian province of Central Sulawesi ( Sulawesi Tengah ). The city has 55 512 inhabitants (calculated 2010).

Geography and infrastructure

Poso is the government seat of the administrative district ( kabupaten ) Poso. The city is situated on the banks of Posobucht. Here is one of the most important ports on the north coast of Central Sulawesi.

The river has its origin in Poso 40 km south Pososee and empties into the sea near the town. Poso has an airport, but which is not served in regular service.

History

Since 1998 and especially in 2005 always weider religious riots shook the area around Poso. Many lives were lost and many buildings were destroyed.
