Powell Island

Powell Iceland is a small, uninhabited island in the Southern Ocean, which belongs to the South Orkney Islands. It is situated between the main island of the group Coronation Iceland and the second largest island Laurie Iceland and is separated from them by the Lewthwaite Strait or the Washington Strait. The elongated, mostly ice-covered island is in north-south direction to a length of about seven miles, in east-west direction, the width, however, only about three kilometers. Its area is 20 km ².

Powell Iceland was discovered and mapped by the seal hunters Nathaniel Palmer and George Powell (1794-1823) in December 1821. 1839, the island was named after the latter.
