Prague Symphony Orchestra

The Symfonický orchestr hlavního města Prahy FOK ( Czech for, freely translated, Symphony Orchestra of Prague - FOK, German designation not uniform, mostly: Prague Symphony Orchestra and the Prague Symphony Orchestra, the official international English name: Prague Symphony Orchestra ) is a Czech symphony orchestra from Prague.

History

It was founded in the fall of 1934 by the Czech- Australian conductor Rudolf Pekárek and for the numerous unemployed musicians of the time a springboard. Namely " film, opera and concert " - - First as FOK Orchestra known, the initials " FOK " the entire working range of the orchestra should represent. In December 1934, the orchestra was heard on the radio for the first time. Regular live concerts in the Czech radio and increased use within the Czech film music given the beginnings of the orchestra and helped him to financial stability. Strengthened economically, the orchestra with Václav Smetáček began as director from 1942 to acquire a concert repertoire. Smetáček remained more than 30 years in his position and led the orchestra to world fame. 1952, the orchestra became an official concert ensemble of the city of Prague and changed his name while maintaining his first letter to his current name to German: Symphony Orchestra of Prague - FOK. In 1972 Ladislav Slovák as chief conductor. Other influential leaders were, among others, Jiri Belohlavek, Petr Altrichter and Martin Turnovský. In addition, the orchestra also worked with other internationally renowned Czech conductor Václav Neumann as Zdeněk Košler and Vladimír Válek.

Since 1995 the orchestra invested by crossover concepts of classical music with metal in innovative projects.

Since the concert season 2006/2007 Jiří Kout has been chief conductor of the orchestra.
