Pramoedya Ananta Toer

Pramoedya Ananta Toer ( born February 6, 1925 in Blora, Central Java, † April 30, 2006 in Jakarta ) was an Indonesian writer.

During the Japanese occupation of Indonesia in World War II Toer fought in the paramilitary organization Pemuda. 1948/49, locked him the Dutch occupiers because of " anti-colonial thinking" one. After a stay in Holland he worked as a writer and editor in Jakarta. Because of its proximity to communist organizations, he was imprisoned after the coup, the later dictator Soeharto without trial, and spent the years 1965-1979 in various prisons, first in Nusa Kambangan and then mainly on the prison island of Buru. Here he wrote his most famous work, the novel Buru tetralogy. From his time on Buru the strongly autobiographical work tells Silent Song of a mute. After intervention by the Carter administration, he was released in 1979, but could not leave Jakarta until the fall Soehartos 1998. His works appear again in Indonesia until 1999.

April 28, 2006 Toer was hospitalized with heart problems and problems with his diabetes disease to the ICU of St. Carolus Hospital in Jakarta. After his release, his health deteriorated and on April 30, 2006, he died at his daughter's house.

Pramoedya Ananta Toer is considered, especially abroad, as the most important Indonesian author of the 20th century. His works have been translated into 37 languages.
