The ranking of press freedom (English Press Freedom Index ) is an assessment of press freedom in almost all countries of the world and is created by the non-governmental organization Reporters Without Borders on the basis of questionnaires.

For the ranking questionnaires are used worldwide to partner organizations (organizations, campaigning for press freedom worldwide), distributed to their correspondents from existing network as well as to journalists, researchers, jurists and human rights activists.

You are asked about whether journalists have been arrested illegally ( eg, without a warrant, longer than the maximum period of police custody, without a court hearing ), physically abused or abducted or have fled intimidation or threats from the country. Also, treat the questions of whether the state has a television, radio, print media or Internet service monopoly, and to what extent these media he monitored and censored.

Ranking of press freedom

Reporters Without Borders published on 20 October 2010 for the ninth time a ranking for worldwide press freedom. But the situation in 176 countries between September 1, 2009 and September 1, 2010 was evaluated. The ranking 2011-2012 ( December 2010-November 2011 ) - 2012 refers to the year of publication, the year is used for all subsequent reports - with 177 States was published on January 25, 2012 (new addition is the independent South Sudan since July 2011 ). Until 2013, the United States of America and Israel were each listed twice: for the country itself and for actions in Afghanistan and Iraq or the Palestinian territories. Also Cyprus is listed twice, once for the Republic of Cyprus, a second time for the Turkish occupied northern Cyprus. In the list published in January 2013, the year has been adjusted so that it refers to the year of publication ( rather than on individual the evaluated year). Newly included Andorra and Liechtenstein. At the World Press Freedom Index of February 2014 was added in Belize.

Note: Since the scale of the index has been changed several times by Reporters Without Borders, a different classification and thus deviating color key as in the above graphic was used to provide a rough comparison, the number of countries can be colored differently.
