Prijs der Nederlandse Letteren

The Prijs Nederlandse Letteren ( Prize of Dutch Literature ) is the most important literary prize of the Dutch language. It is awarded every three years since 1956 by the Dutch Language Union ( Dutch Language Union ), which can thereby be advised by an independent jury. After the winners of 2007, Jeroen Brouwers, had the amount of prize money found to be too low and refused to accept the prize money of 16,000 euros was raised to 40,000 euros. In addition, the rotational basis provided for the year 2010 next award ceremony because of the refusal by Brouwers has been brought forward to 2009.

The prize is awarded to writers from Flanders (Belgium ), the Netherlands and Suriname. The jury is made up of three Dutch, three Flemish and Surinamese a member. The chair is held alternately by a Flemish and Dutch member.

The award will be presented at each change in a country by the respective head of state. One exception there was only 2001 when the Belgian king refused to hand over the prize to the child abuse suspect cohabitees of the diseased laureate Gerard Reve and this gave an official of the Dutch Language Union.
