Prince Edward, Duke of York and Albany

Prince Edward Augustus of England and Hanover (born 14 Märzjul / March 25 1739greg in London. . † September 17, 1767 in Monte Carlo, Monaco) was Duke of York and Albany, and Earl of Ulster (since April 1, 1760 ).

Life

Eduard August was the second son of Prince Frederick Louis of Wales (1707-1751) and his wife Augusta of Saxe- Gotha -Altenburg (1719-1772), daughter of Duke Frederick II and Magdalena Augusta of Anhalt- Zerbst. His grandfather, King George II granted him the title of duke of York and Albany.

When Eduard August was on the way to Genoa, he fell ill and was brought ashore at the next port. At the court of Monaco's Prince Honoré III. he died shortly afterwards. His body was brought back to England and buried in Westminster Abbey. Eduard August died unmarried and without issue.

He was an active Freemason and a member of German lodges; his honor was awarded the Grand Lodge of Prussia the additional name " Royal York for friendship."
