Prince Gustaf, Duke of Uppland

Franz Gustav Oscar ( born June 18, 1827 Haga Palace, Solna Municipality, Sweden, † September 24, 1852 in Kristiania (Oslo ), Norway ) was a Swedish prince, Duke of Uppland and composer. He was the second son of King Oscar I with Joséphine de Beauharnais.

Like his brothers Karl and Oscar, who later both kings were, Gustav received a good education, first with private teachers, and later at the University of Uppsala. In 1846 he became an honorary member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Since 1850, he owned Stjärnsund Castle, which he had renovated.

Prince Gustav was awarded the honorary title " singer Prince", as he has so far showed the greatest musical talents of all members of the House of Bernadotte. He studied under Adolf Fredrik Lindblad and was an excellent pianist and singer. Of his compositions, which he published under the pseudonym G ****, are obtained about 50, including marches and art songs. Two of these works, Studentsången ( " student song " ) and Vårsången ( " song of spring " ), are now often found in the Swedish men's choirs program. The lyrics to both songs written by the poet Herman Sätherberg. Especially as a student in Uppsala to Franz Gustav sang along with his brothers or with students invited a lot.
