Princess Adelaide of Schaumburg-Lippe

Adelheid, Princess of Schaumburg -Lippe (full name: Friederike Luise Adelheid Marie Hilda Eugenie ) ( born September 22, 1875 in Castle Ratiborice, Bohemia, † January 27, 1971 in Ballenstedt, GDR ) was a member of the House of Schaumburg-Lippe and of 1908 to 1918, the last Duchess of Saxe- Altenburg.

Life

Princess Adelheid was a daughter of Prince Wilhelm of Schaumburg -Lippe (1834-1906), youngest son of Prince Georg Wilhelm of Schaumburg -Lippe and Princess Bathildis of Anhalt-Dessau ( 1837-1902 ).

Together with four brothers and three sisters, she grew up in Bohemia in the princely rule Náchod. On February 17, 1898 married Princess Adelheid Prince Ernst of Saxe- Altenburg, who ascended the throne in 1908 when Duke Ernst II. The wedding took place in Biickeburg, the residence of her cousin, Prince Georg of Schaumburg -Lippe instead, his wife Anna Marie was the sister of the groom. The young couple was based on the marriage first in a stately villa in Potsdam. There, in 1899 and 1905 all four children of the couple were born between the years. With the death of his uncle Ernst I, on 7 February 1908, Duke Ernst II and Adelheid drew on his page to as Duchess of Saxe- Altenburg Altenburg.

Ernst II had a great passion for the theater and his interest in the theater stretched "to the beautiful and talented actresses ." At the end of the First World War took place on 13 November 1918, the abdication of the Duke. "Ultimately led his affairs to that Adelheid was forced after the abdication of the Duke in 1918, the marriage with the words, " as the mother of the nation, I have to endure the shame, than ( only ) wife, I am to no longer willing " to quit. " On January 17, 1920, the marriage ended in divorce after 22 years. While Ernst with an opera singer entered into a second marriage, Adelheid remained single.

She died on 27 January 1971 at the age of 95 years in Ballenstedt in the GDR, almost twenty years after the Princess Anna Luise von Schwarzburg, who died in November 1951 in Sondershausen and divorced from her Ernst II, the only former German Federal prince was still became a citizen of the GDR and died in 1955.
