Princess Friederike of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg

Friederike of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg- Glücksburg ( born November 9, 1811 in Gottorp Castle, † July 10, 1902 in Alexisbad ) married in 1834 Duke Carl Alexander of Anhalt- Bernburg and became Duchess of Anhalt- Bernburg.

Life

Friederike's parents were Friedrich Wilhelm of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg- Glücksburg (1785-1831) and Louise Caroline of Hesse -Kassel (1789-1867), daughter of Charles of Hesse -Kassel.

After Duke Karl Alexander became ill with severe schizophrenia, in 1863 co-ruler until his death. After the duke's death the duchy of Anhalt- Bernburg was combined with the Duchy of Anhalt- Dessau and Duchess Friederike lived then until her death on July 10, 1902 Castle Ballenstedt.

She devoted herself to strong social concerns and the development of mining in the Duchy. Her brother, Christian (1818-1906) in 1863 when Christian IX. King of Denmark.

One of three former high schools in Bernburg (Saale ) was named after her.
