Princess Louise of Hesse-Darmstadt (1761–1829)

Luise Henriette Caroline of Hesse -Darmstadt (* February 15, 1761 in Darmstadt, † October 24, 1829 in Auerbach ) was by marriage the first Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine.

Life

Louise was a daughter of Prince Georg Wilhelm of Hesse- Darmstadt (1722-1782) from his marriage to Louise (1729-1818), daughter of Count Christian Karl Reinhard of Leiningen - Dabo.

The princess was in 1770 to the retinue of Marie Antoinette, as they traveled to her marriage to France. With the French Queen Louise was in correspondence to 1792.

Luise married on February 19, 1777 in Darmstadt her cousin the then Crown Prince Ludwig of Hesse -Darmstadt ( 1753-1830 ). Her husband ruled since 1790 as Landgrave Ludwig X in Hesse-Darmstadt and was built in 1806 as Ludwig I first Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine.

Louise spent the summer months since 1783 regularly in the state Fürstenlager where she also died in 1829. Here they had charitably on the population Auerbach. The Grand Duchess was formed as revered among the people and described amiable. At her court reversed Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller in her salon, read from his Don Carlos. Napoleon is said to have the beautiful Louise, who he believed to be one of the most brilliant women of her time promised to give her a crown.

After Luise Luis Road and Luis Square are named in Darmstadt.
