Princess Mathilde of Saxony (1863–1933)

Mathilde Marie Auguste of Saxony ( born March 19, 1863 in Dresden, † March 27, 1933 ibid ) was a Saxon princess.

Life

Princess Mathilde Marie Auguste of Saxony was a daughter of King George of Saxony and Maria Anna of Braganza and Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Infanta of Portugal.

The quiet, gentle Mathilde, should be married to Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria - Hungary after her father's plans. However, rejected this and instead married Princess Stephanie of Belgium.

Later, when Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria -Este out of love for Sophie Chotková of Chotkowa refused to marry the Saxon princess, the ratio between the Kingdom of Saxony and Austria was out of tune. The situation could only be relaxed when the young Archduke Otto Franz Joseph of Austria married a sister of Mathilde, Princess Maria Josepha of Saxony.

Mathilde was embittered by such refusals and the people made in their environment difficult life. In the Saxon population it was by far the least popular member of the royal family.

Between 1890 and 1901, Princess Mathilde had taken lessons at the Dresden painter and illustrator Alfred Diethe. In the following years they then painted several landscapes and scenes from court life in Pillnitz. 24 of which were published as large format prints at Römmler & Jonas. More paintings appeared on postcards for charitable purposes.

Mathilde died unmarried on 27 March 1933, 70 years. She is buried in the crypt of the new Catholic Hofkirche in Dresden.
