Princess Sophie of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld

Sophie Friederike Karoline Luise of Saxe- Coburg -Saalfeld ( born August 19, 1778 in Coburg, † July 9, 1835 in Tuschimitz, Bohemia ) was a Princess of Saxe -Coburg- Saalfeld and by marriage Countess of Mensdorff -Pouilly.

Life

Sophie was the eldest child of the Duke Franz Friedrich of Saxe- Coburg -Saalfeld (1750-1806), from his marriage to Auguste (1757-1831), daughter of Count Heinrich XXIV Reuss to Ebersdorf. Her brother Leopold King of the Belgians in 1831, her sister, Juliane was Russian Grand Duchess and her sister Victoria, she was an aunt of Queen Victoria. Her brother Ernst followed in 1806 his father as Duke of Saxe- Coburg -Saalfeld.

A particularly close relationship she had with her sister Antoinette, who she often visited at Schloss Fantaisie; a sanctuary of French emigrants. Here she met her future husband. She married on 23 February 1804 in Coburg Emmanuel Mensdorff -Pouilly ( 1777-1852 ), who was raised in 1818 in the rank of count.

In 1806, her husband was on holiday in Saalfeld, a secondary residence of the Coburg court. It was therefore possible for him after the battle of Saalfeld trigger the body of Prince Louis Ferdinand and protect the farm of his father and his family against the insolence of the victorious French troops.

From 1824 to 1834 Sophie lived in Mainz, where her husband was commander of the federal fortress. Here they were referred to generically as " princess ". She was active as a writer and in 1830 published her romantic " tales and stories ". Sophie was awarded the Grand Cross of the Imperial Russian St. Katharine North. She is buried in the park of Schloss Preitenstein, the family estate of the family Mensdorff -Pouilly.

From their marriage Sophie had six sons:
