Schloss Fantaisie

The Fantaisie Castle stands in Ecker Village Donndorf, five kilometers west of Bayreuth. It was built as a summer residence more (after the Hermitage ) for the Margrave pair Friedrich and Wilhelmine of Brandenburg- Bayreuth.

This accumulated during a nearly one-year trip to Italy impressions that turn them into Fantaisie Palace. Wilhelmine did not live to the start of construction, she died in 1758 at the age of 49 years. Friedrich began in 1761 with the construction. He, too, could not witness the completion. He died in 1763 at the age of 51 years in Bayreuth.

The daughter of the Margrave couple, Princess Friederike, inherited the property 1763rd From her name comes Fantaisie. They had the castle built until 1765 by Johann Jacob Spindler. It houses the Spindler Cabinet, an inlaid piece of the brothers Johann Friedrich and Heinrich Wilhelm Spindler in a faithful reproduction of the original, which is located in Munich in the Bavarian National Museum.

However, subsequent conversions has only very little remains of the original castle. The impressive palace park combines elements from the style of Rococo phases, sensitivity, romanticism and historicism. In the castle building the first garden art museum in Germany was established in 2000. For several years, the park is restored to its original state. Thus, the south-facing terraces, the show towards the lake, were re- planted with vines, the maze was again applied and the water cascade with sandstone shells and mythical creatures repaired.
