With cabinet chief of the " chief advisor " a political decision-maker is referred to in general. The designation follows a French political tradition and is particularly common in France, Canada, Belgium, Austria and the European Union.

The Chief of Cabinet is the first person who consults a political leader in matters of analysis and strategy. His advisory role may also include regular ( pre-) contacts with external parties, especially journalists. Also, personnel policy decisions of his "bosses" are often prepared and accompanied by him.
