Gorkha ( Nepali: भरतपुर ) is a city and an administrative community ( Nepali: Nagarpalika, English: municipality ) in Nepal in the Gorkha district at an altitude of 1070 m. The ancient royal city is located in the center of Nepal and had 2011 32.473 inhabitants. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations of Nepal.

From 1996 to 2009, the administrative municipality ( Municipality ) was called the city Ghorka Prithvinarayan or Prithbhinarayan, named after King Prithvi Narayan Shah, who was born in Gorkha and is regarded as the founder of the State of Nepal. After the abolition of the monarchy, the name was changed.

Attractions

  • The old Royal Palace Gorkha Durbar is the main attraction of the city. It is situated on a hill, about 1000 feet above sea level.
  • Gorkha Bazaar, the traditional street market in Gorkha.
  • Gorakhanath Cave, the cave temple, which is only about 10 meters altitude below the Royal Palace Gorkha Durbar, is considered one of the largest sanctuaries in the country.
  • The Manakamana temple is dedicated to goddess Durga and is a popular pilgrimage site with around 3,000 visitors a day. Temple is a cable car.
  • The Manaslu near Gorkha is with 8163 meters of the eight highest mountain on earth. The Tours Manaslu usually start in Gorkha.
