Procopius of Ustyug

Procopius of Ustjug, also Procopius of Lübeck or Procopius of Ustjug and Lübeck ( Luebeck *, † in Veliky Ustjug 1303) was a merchant from Lübeck and was as Jurodiwy saint of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Prokop, whose real name is possibly Jacob Potharst, came as a Hanseatic merchant from Lübeck to Novgorod and arrived there in the office Peterhof to prosperity and wealth, which he completely renounced in 1300 when he converted from Roman Catholic to the Russian Orthodox faith by his fortune distributed to the poor in order to live henceforth as a fool in Christ, in the Russian Orthodox Church also called Jurodiwy. He went to live on church stairs and garbage dumps and should have kept the city Ustjug from ruin by his prayers.

According to St. Procopius of Ustjug several Russian Orthodox churches and church buildings are named in Germany. So also used by the Russian Orthodox community of his hometown Lübeck Strobukeskapelle ( side chapel of St. Catherine's Church ) and the Russian Orthodox Church in Hamburg Prokop -Eimsbuettel.

His feast day is July 8.

On icons, he is often shown together with the Holy locust of Ustjug, who was also a Jurodiwy.
