Prometea

Prometea (born 28 May 2003 in Cremona ) is a female domestic horse and the first cloned horse in the world.

The Haflinger mare who fought out the foal was also supplier of the genetic material. It was taken out of their skin and fused with an enucleated oocyte. 327 more attempts by the research team headed by Cesare Galli from the Laboratory of Reproductive Technology in Cremona failed. Also 517 further experiments with the DNA of an Arabian stallion were unsuccessful.

The cloning of racing and sport horses is possible to share the genetic material of castrated horses in later generations. 2005, the first cloned racehorse was born. The genetic material comes from Pieraz, a long-distance racehorse. At conventional horse racing cloned horses may not participate. Also ET, the success of the horse jumping rider Hugo Simon, was successfully cloned. The colt was born in 2006 and is to be registered in a Belgian studbook.

Prometea brought on 17 March 2008 a colt named Pegaso born.
