History

In the past, from 1904 to 1912, the Seconda Categoria was the second stage of the Italian local, regional competitions, in which home teams started on the football field junior and substitute. New teams of the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC ) were included in this league.

In February 1912 several members of the new association FIGC began to draft a new rule providing ascents and descents of the Seconda Categoria in the Prima Categoria. This new arrangement was resolved during the federal annual meeting in July 1912, so that the Seconda Categoria changed its name in Promozione because the winning team, the rise was made possible in the overlying league. The Promozione the FIGC had played out until the new season 1921/22, as new rules and changes the league system to a 3rd and 4th league expanded.

1922 was the Promozione still the major league at regional level. The 3rd League ( in Italian Terza Divisione = ) took the place of Promozione, so that by 1948/49, no other championship was given this name.

1948 had the 3rd league ( Serie C ) can be reduced because it was oversized. It was divided into three inter-regional leagues ( north, center and south), which included a different number of divisions and teams. Therefore, it was initiated by the Association that the teams should descend in large numbers in the regional leagues. Their objections resulted in the establishment of another league level between Series C and the top Regional Prima Divisione (Italian for first league). They called Promozione. It existed until the end of season 1951/52, when it was downgraded to the top regional category and renamed Promozione Regional.

The Regional Promozione was renamed at the start of the season in 1957/58 Campionato Nazionale Dilettanti and consisted in two years. After resolution of the new rules on amateur leagues was Lega Nazionale Dilettanti 1959 Campionato Nazionale Dilettanti and the league was renamed Prima Categoria.

In 1967, a new project from the Regional Council of Lombardy was started. It was the introduction of a top amateur league ( amateur now Excellenza ). , By reducing the divisions that make up the Prima Categoria composed The FIGC was this top regional level the old name Promozione. This league is now the second level of the regional amateur leagues. The change was introduced at the beginning of the 1991/92 season.
