Proofreading

Under Proofreading refers to the revision of a text on any errors. In the traditional printing industry to a copy of a manuscript was commonly created, which was set after its processing.

The editing of the text and proofreading are delimited from each other here. Earlier texts often contain typographical errors that were caused during the setting of the jig, the wrong letters suggested ( hence the name typo for typo that refers to an offset or wrong letter ). As handwritten originals were still common, it was often easier for the revision of the text to put a manuscript initially and to make a copy, and then to check these for errors and provided with proofreading marks.

Today's proofreading usually refers to the revision of any text, whether printed or in digital form ( on a computer ), and its error checking. Spelling, punctuation and grammar are mainly corrected during proofreading. A professional proofreading also includes the correction of formatting, expression, and sometimes the style of a text. Proofreading is taken, for example, of students, teachers, companies or authors claim, when it comes to important theses, teaching materials or publications. Proofread texts automatically generated, such as after a computer-aided automatic translation or a retro-digitization.

Not to be confused with the proofreading proofreading, which includes the fields of activity of the proofreading. In addition, however substantive changes are made, where it serves as a better understanding, in collaboration with the author.

Proofreaders often work as a one-man business or in specialized company with a few employees or are full-time lecturers.
