Propargyl alcohol ( IUPAC name: 2- propyn- 1-ol) is an organic compound. He is the simplest representative of the alkynols, a group of unsaturated alcohols and contains the propargyl group.

Properties

The inflammatory, colorless liquid has a characteristic odor. With a flash point of 33 ° C can form explosive mixtures with air above this temperature. The explosive range is between 2.8 vol% (66 g/m3) as the lower explosive limit ( LEL) and 78 vol% (1817 g/m3 ) and upper explosive limit (UEL ). The vapor is heavier than air. The ignition temperature is 365 ° C. The fabric falls within the temperature class T2. Under the influence of heat, light, oxidizing agents and peroxides propargyl alcohol can be polymerized. With oxidizing agents violent reactions can take place under heat. Exceeding the occupational exposure limit can not be detected by smell.

Propargyl alcohol can be dimerized in the presence of gold catalysts and methanol to give a cyclic bisketal, eluting with 93 % yield of the trans-isomer is formed.

Use

Propargyl alcohol is used, inter alia, as a corrosion inhibitor for steel ( to attack by acids), as a stabilizer for chlorine- alkanes and as an intermediate for organic syntheses.
