(Proteus anguinus )

The Olme ( Proteidae ) are a family of salamanders. All Olme are completely aquatil, have only a simple kind of lung and keep her life two larval gill slits, external gills and a neotene, larvae -like shape.

There are two species that occur in North America ( Necturus ) and in Europe ( Proteus ):

  • Genus Necturus Rafinesque, 1819 - furrows newts Type Necturus alabamensis Viosca, 1937
  • Type Necturus beyeri Viosca, 1937
  • Type Necturus lewisi Brimley, 1924
  • Necturus maculosus type ( Rafinesque, 1818) - Spotted Newt furrows
  • Type Necturus punctatus ( Gibbes, 1850)
  • Type Proteus anguinus ( Laurenti, 1768) - proteus

Fossils of Necturus from the Paleocene were found in North America. Proteus is known from the Pleistocene of Germany. In addition, two fossil genera from the Miocene are known. Orthophyia from Germany and Mioproteus from the Caucasus.
