Provost (education)

Provost in the U.S. and Canada, a title for a high administrative level at universities, comparable to the Vice-Chancellor (President) at universities in the UK. The exact role of the Provost, however, varies from institution to institution. At the universities of Cambridge and Oxford in England this is the title of the highest administrative official equal (corresponding to about a Pro- Vice Chancellor ) and is there also a common master. It is used in the United Kingdom, Ireland and at colleges.

The term provost was used in western europe for the warden of Karzers at universities. The term came from the Dutch provoost ( from Latin propositus or praepositus, superior ') on the French Prévôté in 1500 into German.
