Ptujska Gora

Ptujska Gora ( German Maria Neustift ) is a village in the municipality Majšperk in northeastern Slovenia. It is in the region of Lower Styria ( historical Lower Styria ), 320.6 meters above sea level and has 334 inhabitants (as of 2002).

Ptujska Gora is a well-known Slovenian pilgrimage. The gothic pilgrimage church called Basilica Marije Zavetnice s plaščem ( Basilica of the Virgin of Mercy ) dates from the 14th century and in 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI. for minor basilica raised. At the main altar of the basilica is also a renowned grace relief of the Madonna of Mercy, built around the year 1410. Beneath her coat, are 82 statues representing some historical figures of that time. According to legend, Mary enveloped the church during the Turkish attacks in a dark cloud, so that the Turks could not see them. The village was therefore long under the name Črna Gora ( Black Mountain ) is known before it was renamed in Ptujska Gora beginning of the 20th century.
