Publius Decius Mus (consul 340 BC)

Publius Decius Mus († 340 BC at Vesuvius? ) Was a politician of the Roman Republic and reached 340 BC as the first of his family to the consulate. His counterpart was Titus Manlius Torquatus imperiosus.

In the year 352 he was one of a commission ( quinqueviri mensarum ) to combat the debt of the people. As a military tribune, he is said to have 343 BC saved the Roman army besieged by the Samnites. 340 BC he was consul. He gained particular fame through his sacrificial death for Rome ( Devotion ) in the Battle of Vesuvius against the Latins. But this should only be a transfer from the son to the father; his son and grandson of the same name is attributed to the same self-sacrifice in the lore.
