Publix is a US-based company with headquarters in Lakeland, Florida.

The trade company employs more than 159,500 employees at 1,071 store locations ( at 30 June 2013). The shopping markets are located in the U.S. states of Florida ( 754 x), Georgia (180 x), South Carolina ( 48 x ), Tennessee (35 x) and Alabama ( 54 x ).

History

The company founder George W. Jenkins opened in 1930 in Winter Haven, Florida the first supermarket Publix. In 1934 he achieved a turnover of $ 120,000 with his shop. In 1935, he opened a second Supermarket Economy Food Store in Winter Haven. Jenkins company survived the tough economic times of the Second World War and in 1945 acquired 19 hypermarkets by the All American chain.

1951 Jenkins moved the company headquarters to Lakeland, Florida. In 1956, the company exceeded the annual sales of $ 50 million and a profit of $ 1 million for the first time. 1957 Donots stores were converted to the purchasing markets to sell bakery shops. 1959 Publix was the main shopping market in central Florida, and expanded into the south of Florida. 1963 opened the first store in Miami and in 1974 opened the first stores in Jacksonville, Florida. 1982 was in the supermarkets ATMs Presto! positioned.

The first supermarket outside the State of Florida was opened in Savannah, Georgia in 1991 was followed by others in the coming years. As of 1993 opened the first stores in the state of South Carolina, from 1996 in Alabama and in 2002 in Tennessee.
